BCCI Clarifies IPL Opening Ceremony Plans for RCB vs SRH in Bengaluru

The BCCI has officially cancelled the traditional opening ceremony for IPL 2026, which was scheduled for March 28 at Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Why the Ceremony Was Cancelled

The decision was made to honour the 11 fans who lost their lives in a tragic stampede outside the stadium on June 4, 2025, during celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) first title win. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that no cultural or entertainment shows will be held out of respect for the victims and their families. Instead, a grand closing ceremony is planned for the final on May 31, 2026.

Tributes and Safety Measures at Chinnaswamy

Significant gestures and safety protocols have been introduced for the season opener:
  • Permanent Vacant Seats: 11 seats at the stadium will remain permanently empty during matches as a silent tribute.
  • Jersey Number 11: RCB players will wear jersey number 11 during all practice sessions throughout the 2026 season.
  • Memorial Plaque: A dedicated space for reflection and a memorial plaque will be unveiled near the stadium’s inner entrance.
  • Crowd Control: Attendance for the opening match is capped at 30,000 spectators, with mandatory QR code scanning to ensure safety.
